The Graaff-Reinet Museum | Graaff Reinet

The Graaff Reinet Museum was  established in 1956 and houses a wonderful collection of Graaff-Reinet’s rich cultural and natural heritage. The buildings are unique cultural gems and an integral part of the town, making Graaff-Reinet one of the most historically significant sites in the country, and a great place to visit for those who cherish by gone memories.

It’s the fifth largest Province-aided museum in the Eastern Cape and is a hugely popular tourist attraction. The Military History Museum was establised in 2005 and is the most recent addition to the museum complex.

The Graaff-Reinet Museum – Reinet House | Graaff Reinet

Reinet House was  formerly a Dutch Reformed Church parsonage, and was home to three ministers prior to 1822, when the Rev. Andrew Murray, from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, became the resident minister.

Later the building was used as a boarding establishment for girls wishing to train as teachers, and it was the late Miss Helen Murray, a sister of Rev. Charles Murray, and for many years principal of the Midland Seminary who named the house “Reinet House”.

It was bought and sold a couple to times and in 1956 the Governor General, the Right Hon. E. G. Jansen, officially opened the Graaff-Reinet Museum.

Reinet House is  a fine example of a Cape H-plan house, and much of the building material was acquired locally.

Unfortunately a fire in 1980 destroyed part of the building, but it has been restored and houses a fine collection of period furniture and relics from the past.

Take a trip down Memory Lane and glean some fascinating history of the Murray family and feast on a bygone era.

Guided tours can be arranged and you can even use the premises for your wedding photos.
