The Valley of Desolation is a premier tourist attraction with thousands visiting the site each year.It was declared a National Monument in 1939, the original road to the Valley of Desolation being constructed by labourers using just picks and shovels.

Information displays tell visitors about the reserve which is sometimes referred to as the ‘Cathedral of the Mountains’ because of the sheer majesty of the area.
To the north is the highest peak in the Sneeuberg known as Compassberg. The southern horizon stretches as far as the distant Cockscomb Mountains, to the east lies the Driekoppie and the Nardausberg, both of which are often covered in snow during winter.
Gravel roads provide visitors with some excellent gameviewing and bird watching opportunies and there is also place to have picnics with braai and ablution facilities. There are a number of trails and walks lasting from about 45 minutes to a couple of nights.
