In 1847 the citizens of the town established a public library, and although lack of funds hindered the growth of the library, it developed over the years into the town’s cultural centre.

By 1878 the southern wing was added and in 1926 the northern wing was added on the site of the old branddam.
A modern library was built in Parsonage Street in 1981, and the Municipality donated the old building to the Graaff-Reinet Museum which houses specialized collections. It was proclaimed a National Monument in 1987.

Known as the Grotekerk, this famous landmark, built using local sandstone, is to be found in the centre of Graaff-Reinet and is a replica of the Cathedral in Salisbury. The opening of the Dutch Reformed Church occurred on 11 September 1887 and Professor de Vos delivered the inaugural sermon.

Building of the church started in 1886 and the early Gothic style architecture is still regarded as of the best in the country. The pulpit is also a Gothic style structure. It has a flight of stairs on either side. The reading desk is 9 feet and 6 inches from the floor. The steeple of the building measures 150 ft and the church is lit with magnificent stained glass windows.
There is seating for 1500 worshippers and during Reverend Andrew Murray’s term of office 14 valuable items of old Cape silver were acquired for use during the communion service. The ecclesiastical silver in the church is of such high value that one can only get a view of it in picture form.
The church also has a chimney …the fireplace is situated in the vestry.

The Valley of Desolation is a premier tourist attraction with thousands visiting the site each year.It was declared a National Monument in 1939, the original road to the Valley of Desolation being constructed by labourers using just picks and shovels.

Information displays tell visitors about the reserve which is sometimes referred to as the ‘Cathedral of the Mountains’ because of the sheer majesty of the area.
To the north is the highest peak in the Sneeuberg known as Compassberg. The southern horizon stretches as far as the distant Cockscomb Mountains, to the east lies the Driekoppie and the Nardausberg, both of which are often covered in snow during winter.
Gravel roads provide visitors with some excellent gameviewing and bird watching opportunies and there is also place to have picnics with braai and ablution facilities. There are a number of trails and walks lasting from about 45 minutes to a couple of nights.
