Graaff Reinet | KAROORUS | South Africa

Experience Graaff Reinet In All Its Splendour And Three-Star Luxury

Graaff Reinet is the oldest town in the Eastern Cape and as such, it offers many historically and culturally significant attractions, among which are the 200-plus old buildings in town with National Monument status.  One example is Urquhart House, which may have been built as long ago as 1806 and was once the home of Herbert Urquhart, the town’s longest-serving mayor of 21 years.

Reinet House and Old Library

Reinet House is also one of Graaff Reinet’s oldest buildings, dating back to 1812 and having the distinction of serving as the home of two famous reverends in the town’s history: both Andrew Murray and later his son, Charles.  The Old Library was built in the early 1800s and expanded in 1847, when it became the town library, a title it held until 1981, when a larger and more modern facility replaced it.  Today, many of the town’s artefacts can be seen in the Graaff Reinet Museum.

Natural Attractions

Graaff Reinet is situated in the Karoo Heartland that also comprises towns such as Murraysburg, Steytlerville, Cradock and Wolwefontein.  This is the Great Karoo, or “Place of Thirst”, but the town is an oasis in this harshly beautiful landscape, thanks to the Nqweba Dam just outside town, which also falls within the boundaries of the Camdeboo National Park.  The Camdeboo is home to:

  • 336 plant species
  • over 220 bird species
  • 43 mammal species
  • five frog species
  • nineteen lizard species
  • five tortoise species
  • ten snake species

Self-Catering Accommodation Graaff-Reinet | Karoo Rus

Fully Equipped Self-Catering Accommodation In Graaff-Reinet For The Discerning Guest

The road is long and you are thinking about self-catering accommodation when Graaff-Reinet looms in the distance – should you push on to Oudtshoorn, which is another three hours’ drive?  We venture you would not, once you have seen what this classy town has to offer and how delightfully inviting our accommodation is.  Classy is certainly the right word once you have feasted your eyes on the more than two hundred historical buildings in town that have been declared National Monuments.

Graaff-Reinet Museum

The original Reinet House has been turned into the Graaff-Reinet Museum and our self-catering accommodation in Graaff-Reinet is not far from the museum complex, which now encompasses four buildings.  The total floor area has grown to nearly 4,000 square metres in 2005, when the Military History Museum was added.  Another worthwhile stop is the Old Library, which was built in 1847 and remained the town library until 1981.

Urquhart House

Urquhart House is another historical attraction that is rather close to our self-catering accommodation and one of Graaff-Reinet’s oldest historical buildings; it was built between 1806 and 1821.  Charles James Spiller, an 1820 Settler, was one of the owners, as was David Sebastian Martin Casper Carel Schultz, who modernised the house late in the 19th Century.

Luxury Self-Catering Accommodation in Graaff-Reinet

Besides all these historical attractions, the Camdeboo National Park outside town is also a wonderful place to spend time for its amazing natural beauty, the Valley of Desolation and hundreds of plant and animal species.  Your stay will be doubly rewarding in our fully-equipped self-catering accommodation that includes:

  • a fully fitted kitchenette for cooking a proper meal
  • air conditioning and alarm system
  • secure, off-street parking and private entrance
  • a choice of units, from a honeymoon suite and family unit to pet- and wheelchair-friendly units

These winning features are all standard at our comfortable self-catering accommodation in Graaff-Reinet.
